Curator visits La Belle shipwreck Austin, Texas

In February 2020, Dr Toby Jones, Curator of Newport Medieval Ship Project, visited the 17th C. La Belle shipwreck, which is now on display in Austin, Texas. This visit was funded by ICOM and the British Council. While there, he met with the people who conserved and reassembled the vessel and also the curators who designed and manage the exhibition. More details will be in our next members newsletter.

Toby also gave several Newport ship lectures to the Nautical Archaeology Program in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University.
The Nautical Archaeology Program have made available a recording of Toby’s presentation ”The Newport Medieval Ship: Archaeological discoveries, conservation challenges and display opportunities’‘ on their facebook page.

We also have links to a number of other “Videos and presentations about the ship” and if you are already familiar with the Newport Ship and wish to delve even deeper why not pop over to the “Specialist reports and bibliography” page.
